AIP Dairy Substitutes for Cheese, Yogurt, Milk, and Ice Cream

Louise | September 6

Getting used to a dairy-free diet can be tough, especially when you have to also avoid so many other foods on AIP.

The food industry makes it even more difficult, as there are hardly any prepared foods that are AIP-friendly.

And then online recipes and cookbooks aren’t much help (unless you buy AIP-specific cookbooks like our’s here).

That’s why we’ve created this list of dairy substitutes. So you can still enjoy some of your favorite recipes – dairy-free and AIP-compliant.

Please note: as always, even if an ingredient is AIP-compliant, if you’re sensitive to it, please avoid it.

AIP Ingredient Swaps for Dairy Products www.healingautoimmune.com/aip-substitute-dairy #aip

Why do you have to avoid dairy on AIP?

While dairy (especially in the raw and fermented forms) can be highly nourishing, it can also be problematic for many people with autoimmune conditions.

In particular, most forms of dairy we eat today is highly processed. Pasteurization destroys the beneficial bacteria and enzymes found in raw dairy that would help us to digest it.

Preservatives are sometimes added to dairy products give them a longer shelf life, and the steroid hormones found in dairy may even increase cancer risk. (1, 2)

These aren’t things you want in your body when you’re trying to heal from an autoimmune illness.

Plus, many people with autoimmune issues have sensitivities to the lactose or casein in dairy products. (3)

Dr. Amy Myers, MD is an advocate for reversing autoimmunity with diet and lifestyle. According to Myers, “Gluten and dairy are at the top of my list of foods you should never eat, especially if you have an autoimmune disease.”

In many cases, you might not think you have those sensitivities even if you do. That’s why it’s very important to avoid all dairy products for at least 30 days and then try introducing them one at a time.

AIP Ingredient Swaps for butter

1. Coconut oil (we like this brand)

The best substitute for butter or ghee on the Paleo autoimmune protocol is coconut oil.

It’s also creamy and reacts in a similar way. It’s great for baked goods or sautéing meats and vegetables.

In some baked recipes, you may be able to use coconut butter (also called coconut manna). Note that coconut butter contains coconut oil as well as dried coconut bits so it doesn’t work well as a cooking oil, but it’s a great substitute for nut butters.

2. Lard

Lard, or pig fat, is another great option instead of butter or ghee. Use it in cooking sautés or baking savory dishes as it does have a slightly “meaty” flavor.

AIP Swaps for milk/cream

Since nut milks, rice milk and soy milk are all out on the Paleo autoimmune protocol, coconut milk and coconut cream are the best substitutes for traditional dairy milk.

The best option is to make your own coconut milk (try this recipe here) as most of the prepackaged brands use guar gum or another non-AIP thickener to create a creamier milk.

Recently I’m seeing more brands that don’t contain funky additives, like this one here. The ingredients are just organic coconut and purified water.

To get coconut cream, just let the canned coconut milk settle for a day. Then carefully open the can and scoop out the coconut cream from the top of the can. The bottom water can be thrown away.

AIP Swaps for cheese

While the most popular types of dairy-free cheese are made from nuts (like cashews), which aren’t allowed on AIP, there are AIP-cheese options…

1. Nutritional yeast

Nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast that looks like yellow ground flakes and tastes cheesy. It’s been popular in vegan cuisine as a cheese-alternative for years, and it’s also AIP-compliant.

As with everything that comes packaged, be sure you check the ingredients and choose a brand that doesn’t have other unwanted ingredients.

Recipes to try that use nutritional yeast:

AIP Ingredient Swaps For Dairy Products

2. Butternut “Cheese”

This AIP cheese recipe uses butternut squash, tapioca flour, nutritional yeast, gelatin, and avocado oil to create a cheese texture, color, as well as flavor.

3. Zucchini “Cheese”

Don’t have butternut squash or want a lower carb option for cheese? Check out this recipe using zucchini.

4. Cauliflower “Cheese”

This recipe uses cauliflower to create a white-colored sliceable dairy-free cheese. Omit the black pepper to make it AIP-friendly.

And this recipe produces a beautiful golden yellow cauliflower AIP cheese (colored using turmeric).

Cauliflower is also super versatile so you can also use it to create a cheesy dip like this recipe here (which is flavored using nutritional yeast).

AIP Swaps for yogurt

The main alternative to regular yogurt on the autoimmune protocol is coconut yogurt.

While many stores in the US and in Europe have started selling coconut yogurt, it’s often loaded with non-AIP ingredients (like guar gum). So the best option is to make your own.

Check out our recipe for it here: Instant Pot Coconut Yogurt Recipe.

AIP Swaps for ice cream

It’s possible to eat ice cream while on AIP…it just involves making the ice cream using coconut cream instead of the traditional cream/milk and egg yolks.

Enjoy Your Favorite "Non-AIP" Foods While Healing Your Body!

Your health is worth sticking to AIP...but sometimes, you need to have a little fun and change things up. Breakfast can get boring, and it’s so easy to get stuck in a rut.

Hi, I'm Louise.

Several years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. I had constant pain, swelling, fatigue...and no one could find the source.

When my doctors told me I’d be on medication for the rest of my life, I knew I wanted to manage my symptoms another way and started my journey to healing my body.

And let me tell you...it was tough.

Yes, I felt so much better when I gave up grains, dairy, nuts, etc.

But every time I sat down to a meal it was a struggle.

I couldn’t eat the foods I wanted to. All my favourites -- potatoes, pasta and tomato sauce -- were off limits.

Breakfast was the worst! Pancakes, waffles, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt and granola...even bacon and eggs isn’t AIP friendly. It felt like I had no options.

Every morning I would get up and open my fridge and just STARE at the inside, wondering...what am I going to eat today?

Every morning I would get up and open my fridge and just STARE at the inside, wondering...what am I going to eat today?

It felt like there was nothing I could eat…I started every day feeling hungry and discouraged, with maybe an apple for breakfast.

It was a pretty terrible way to start my mornings. But if I wanted to heal my body, I knew I needed to stick with AIP.

So I started experimenting with AIP ingredients to see if I could recreate my favorite “non-AIP” breakfasts...

I started with my favorite...

Waffles...

Then I moved on to other breakfast favorites, like:

Pancakes... Oatmeal... Hash browns...

Pancakes...

Oatmeal...

Hash browns...

I even figured out how to make TOAST! ...sort of.

It’s way better than the alternative!

The best part was...my “experiments” were working! All of these AIP recipes tasted great, and I was starting to feel better.

It wasn’t instantaneous of course and it wasn’t just eating AIP, but over time I was able to get off my medication and stay symptom-free.

But what my “experiments” showed me was that I could stick to AIP and that it didn’t need to be a struggle.

Now, I was excited about waking up in the morning. Everything was so tasty and delicious!

And other people started telling me how great my recipes were.

And I started to wonder...what other foods could I make AIP and have for breakfast?

34 AIP Easter Recipes You Don’t Want To Miss This Year!

Louise Hendon | April 16

It may seem difficult to put together a tasty Easter dinner when you’re on AIP, but fear not! It’s not as difficult as you think, and you won’t have to make separate dishes for yourself and the rest of the family.

This recipe collection includes appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts that will all make you smack your lips. I’m pretty sure no-one will even realize they are AIP-compliant unless you decide to tell them!

To get the party started, I’ve added some of my favorite breakfast and brunch recipes. For me, the holidays (any holidays, really) are all about slow mornings and spending time with your loved ones, so I like recipes that are easy to whip up or prepare ahead. Casseroles are always a hit, and you won’t need much time for preparation.

Some of the appetizers on this list would make great breakfast dishes, also! For example the salmon cakes; they are sooo tasty – and also quite inexpensive, if you’re cooking for a large crowd.

If you wish to get by with as little cooking as possible, go with the pressure cooker pot roast and some bacon wrapped asparagus. But here’s my best advice: do not skip dessert!

My favorite dessert in this collection is probably the coconut cream pie, and you won’t have to be a professional chef to make it! If you want something even easier, try the blueberry crumble. Your guests will be talking about it long after the holidays!

28 AIP Chicken Wings Recipes For Your Next Game Night

Louise Hendon | January 19

Whether you like to enjoy chicken wings for a weeknight dinner, as a party appetizer or for a game night snack, you’ll always want to make sure they’re extra tasty. And your AIP diet shouldn’t get in the way!

Although you may want to avoid spicy ingredients, there are still plenty of ways to make your chicken wings the best your guests have ever tasted. That’s where this recipe collection will help you – it includes all of my favorite AIP chicken wings recipes, and there are various options that will please even the most demanding taste buds.

What I love about chicken wings is that it’s so easy to prepare more than one kind, without too much effort. Usually, I fix two recipes at once, so that everyone can choose what they like (or, just enjoy both!)

Do you prefer BBQ flavors over garlic and herbs? Perhaps teriyaki or lemon ginger are more to your liking? You’ll find them all, on this list.

You may not need your napkin, as I’m pretty sure you’ll just want to lick your fingers clean!

Whatever recipe turns out your favorite, in the end it’s all about the crispiness – right? And that’s easy to achieve with a few simple tricks.

Check out this 1-minute video to see how you can make crispy chicken wings! (Please note: You should omit hot sauce and pepper from the ingredients, if you’d like to make this recipe AIP-friendly.)

40 AIP Bacon Recipes You Can’t Live Without

Louise Hendon | November 26

Bacon often gets a bad rap…which is a shame, because it’s a great and versatile ingredient that not only tastes good but is easy to cook, as well. While the AIP world may calm you down on the saturated fat and cholesterol issues, there are some other issues with bacon you should be aware of on AIP. Follow these 3 tips to make sure the product you are choosing is AIP-friendly!

5 Tips For Buying AIP Bacon (PLUS where to buy it)

  1. Watch out for nightshades.
Some bacon (and deli meats) contain nightshades in the form of spices (like pepper, paprika). So always read the ingredients list to double check.
  2. Watch out for preservatives and additives.
Most brands of bacon contain additives like sodium phosphates, sodium erythorbate, or sodium ascorbate. While these are considered “safe” for consumption by the FDA, for strict AIP, you’ll want to avoid them.
  3. Go for bacon that uses natural forms of nitrates/nitrites like celery juice.
    What are nitrates and nitrites?
This is one of the most common reasons that many AIP folks worry about their bacon consumption. Nitrates and nitrites are basically preservatives and they can be artificial (cured) or natural (in the form of sea salt or celery juice, most commonly) (uncured). However, whether artificial or natural, it’s the same thing, but if you want to be extra careful, then go for bacon that uses natural forms like celery juice.
  4. Go for bacon that’s free from added antibiotics and hormones and from pigs raised in a humane manner.
This is the critique that carries the most weight. Most of the varieties you buy in your local supermarket comes from hogs that were raised in conditions that would make you shudder, and they were likely fed an abundance of grains and soy (and who knows what else) and were injected frequently with antibiotics and hormones. Unlike cows, pigs don’t eat just grass, but neither should they be raised on the food that they’re fed in most factory farms.
  5. Go for bacon that’s dextrose-free.
Most varieties found in grocery stores contain added sugar (often in the form of dextrose), but you can find brands that are cured with honey or maple syrup instead, and these are allowed on AIP.

Where To Buy AIP Bacon

Ideally, you want to find bacon that only contains the following ingredients – pork, water, salt, celery juice and other AIP seasoning. In the US, there are 3 websites to buy AIP bacon:

36 Free And Fantastic AIP Butternut Squash Recipes

Louise Hendon | November 11

Butternut squash is easily available in most parts of the world, and its mild and sweet flavor has made it one of my personal favorites. It’s perfect for anyone on AIP because it contains plenty of nutrients, like Vitamin A and C, potassium and magnesium.

In theory, also the hard skin of the squash is edible. But the flavor is bitter and we all know how difficult it is to peel, right? If you’d prefer cooking your butternut squash without cutting it, we have great tips for you here.

Sometimes butternut squash is referred to as the winter squash. This name can be misleading since butternut squash is harvested in early fall.

They’re called winter squash because they can be stored for months in a cool and dark place (which is great, if you happen to have a cellar at your house!)

In Latin America, squash is commonly made into candy. While we are not sharing a butternut squash candy recipe here, we’ve included several dessert recipes that have turned this yummy veggie into even yummier treats!

It’s hard to pick a favorite but I bet you are going to fall in love with all the cakes – and definitely the persimmon dessert cups!

For breakfast, I would recommend trying one of the hash recipes. Or perhaps you’re more interested in a nice breakfast soup?

Besides breakfast, we’ve included several delicious butternut squash soup recipes that are easy to make for lunch or dinner. I always make a little extra because, in my opinion, the leftover soup tastes even better the next day!

Butternut squash can also be turned into tasty “rice” or noodles. Try the “mac and cheese” that contains no dairy, or go straight for the lasagna!

34 AIP Zucchini Recipes You Won’t Be Able To Resist

Louise Hendon | October 26

Zucchini is much more versatile than most people realize. I often see people making zucchini salads, or adding it to their vegetable patties. However, you can make almost anything from this wonder veggie.

Zucchinis make a great gluten-free alternative for regular pasta, and making lasagna from them guarantees you a super moist result. (If you’re interested in even more pasta alternatives that are AIP-friendly, we’ve got a full collection for you here.)

This inexpensive vegetable is available year ’round in most places, and its anti-inflammatory components, such as Vitamins C and A, make zucchini the perfect ingredient for anyone on an AIP diet. It has a subtle flavor – juicy, and not too overpowering. If you have a picky eater in your house, try serving crunchy zucchini fries and I bet they will ask for seconds!

Zucchini contains a lot of water, as well as fiber. If you are experiencing digestion issues, you might benefit from adding more zucchini in your diet. And that’s where this recipe collection comes in handy.

No-one likes to eat the same vegetable, cooked in the same way, over and over again. Everyone should be able to enjoy delicious meals and desserts, even if they are on a special diet.

Yes – I said desserts! It may sound strange but zucchini is actually one of my favorite dessert ingredients. It gives bread, muffins, and smoothies just the right kind of texture and adds more moisture.

Don’t know where to get started? Here are a few tips:
* For dinner – try the zucchini and beef casserole with carrot and beef sauce
* For breakfast – make a creamy zucchini blueberry smoothie
* For lunch – enjoy some roasted garlic zucchini hummus
* For dessert – you can’t miss with lemon zucchini bread!

29 AIP Cabbage Recipes You Should Try This Season

Louise | September 5

There are many reasons why cabbage has been such a popular meal ingredient all over the world for centuries.

It’s rich in fiber, which makes it healthy and filling, and it can help improve digestion. Cabbage is filled with vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, copper and folate.

Cabbage is the perfect option when you’re looking for a tasty, AIP-friendly main or side dish ingredient. You’ll also find it available throughout the year in most places, so it’s very inexpensive and a great choice when you’re cooking for a crowd.

Cabbage is often mentioned as one of the staple ingredients of Southern cuisine. Your AIP diet shouldn’t stop you from enjoying those traditional flavors!

Although cabbage loves bacon, we’ve also included completely vegan cabbage side dish options for you to try. Both, common, and slightly unexpected spices like ginger, garlic, turmeric and even cardamom will help you amp up these AIP cabbage recipes like never before!

3 Delicious Ways To Enjoy Cabbage on Your AIP Diet* Short on time? No cooking needed when you’re making a tasty AIP coleslaw.* Feeling lazy? Whip up a quick stir-fry or a cabbage and avocado salad for lunch.* Looking for a tasty family meal? Try Irish colcannon or mouthwatering pork and cabbage stew.

Experiment with different kinds of cabbage to find your favorite! Red cabbage makes a beautiful presentation – however, nothing says “comfort food” like stuffed cabbage rolls made of green cabbage, if you ask me. And they are nightshade-free!

To make things even easier, bring out your crockpot and try slow cooking your cabbage dishes. It’s the perfect way to cook this vegetable and will give you such flavorful results, you’ll want to have cabbage for dinner every other day.
