AIP Smoked Salmon Ceviche Recipe
Imagine it’s summer and you’re sitting on a tropical beach, on a beautiful island. What would you be eating? How about this AIP smoked salmon ceviche? This recipe is as simple as it is delicious. With only four ingredients, every component of this dish has a chance to shine. Too often, tropical inspired food uses inflammatory hot peppers, but this ceviche skips the nightshades and the spice. Instead, it relies on bright lime juice and cilantro to provide the flavor, which creamy avocado and tender smoked salmon form the backbone of the dish. This is a great way to try a new dish without a hassle or any ingredients you need to avoid. It’s summer in your bowl!
What is Ceviche?
Ceviche is a dish made from raw fish cured in citrus juice. It was invented in Peru and there is evidence that it may have been served there over 2000 years ago. It is traditionally a spicy dish, made with aji peppers, common in Peruvian cuisine.
Because the fish is cooked chemically, rather than over heat, it is important to use fresh well sourced fish to minimise any risk. Our ceviche bypasses this problem by using smoked salmon which is already cooked!
Does the Color and Texture on the Outside of an Avocado Matter?
If you are looking for avocados in the produce section, don’t be surprised if you see two different types.
The classic Hass avocado, which has dark greenish black bumpy skin, is grown in California. These avocados are the most common type in America and they are found all over the US.
However, many supermarkets also stock another less common variety of avocado, known as the Florida avocado. Florida avocados have smooth bright green skin and they are typically larger than Hass avocados.
But do they taste different? Actually, yes! They have a lower fat content than Hass avocados and their flavor is milder. They are also much firmer, making them well suited for dicing or slicing, but not mashing or purees.
